Union Cabinet Expands Ayushman Bharat Scheme to Cover Senior Citizens Aged 70+

In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet approved the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) on September 11, 2024, extending health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income. This move will benefit 6 crore senior citizens and 4.5 crore families, providing free health insurance of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year.

Key Highlights of the Expansion:

New Distinct Card – Senior citizens aged 70+ will receive a separate AB PM-JAY card

Top-Up Coverage – Those in existing AB PM-JAY families get an exclusive ₹5 lakh top-up per year

Family Coverage – Uncovered senior citizens will now receive ₹5 lakh annual family coverage

Choice of Schemes – Beneficiaries of CGHS, ECHS, CAPF health schemes can choose between their current plan or AB PM-JAY
